I'm one of the Community Notes judges on Twitter / X. There are always Olympic-level dumb "suggested Notes" like the ones you cite. In particular, anything that Trump or Musk draws some dumb suggestions.

However, most of them get voted down, as far as I can tell.

Not at all surprised. The genius of the community notes idea isn’t that everyone is brilliant. It’s the fact that crowdsourcing should reduce the impact of localized stupidity.

Fact check sites lack that buffer.

On the other hand this blitheringly stupid fact check came from

“PolitiFact Chief Correspondent Louis Jacobson”

Given he is official tribal leader of the fact check clan I feel like we should expect better from him. This was weapons grade stupid.

One does get tired of swatting down the inevitable Suggested Notes whenever Elon says something.

My attitude is that tweets that are inherently opinions should not be fact-checked at all, unless the fact is BLATANTLY false, such that any judge, conservative or liberal, would rate it as "likely to prevail on the merits."

Agree. Fact checking opinions is pure narrative policing. Still, the tendency is slightly more forgivable when you are a pet groomer participating in community notes than it is when fact checking is how you pay the electric bill.

“A pet groomer” ?? What gave you that idea?

Pet groomer was just a random occupation to illustrate the point that nonsense opinion checks are more forgivable on community notes when done by people whose actual professional occupation isn’t “fact checker”.

It’s the same way my wife will tolerate my efforts to replace baseboards and not hold me to the quality standards of a professional carpenter (fortunately).

I mean I wasn’t suggesting you are a pet groomer if that was what you were asking. Looking at your bio I assume we probably have a similar professional background.

Ah. I thought you were reacting to the dog in my profile pic.

My background in technical, legal, and scientific matters is probably 10x that of those “fact checkers.” In fact, when Elon says “you are the media now” he’s partially reacting to the relatively high education level of some of the people “out there.”

Not everyone, of course. But I’ve already Blocked most of the morons.
